Winnipeg Wins 2023 Site Selection

Winnipeg, Canada has won the vote to host the 2023 NASFiC. Chicon 8 reports that 343 ballots were cast in the election, with 312 in favour of Winnipeg. Orlando, USA, withdrew from the race early in August leaving Winnipeg as the only official bid. For the detailed results, see the NASFiC 2023 Site Selection Report from the Site Selection administrator. Winnipeg was also the host of the 1994 Worldcon.

Winnipeg’s Guests of Honor will be Dr. Philip J. Currie, Julie Czerneda, John Mansfield, Waubgeshig Rice, Nisi Shawl and Katherina Vermette. The Ghost of Honour will be Lorna Toolis and the Toastmaster will be Tanya Huff. The convention will be chaired by Robbie Bourget and Linda Ross-Mansfield.

San Juan to host 2017 NASFiC

San Juan in Puerto Rico will be the site of the 2017 NASFiC. It won a site selection vote against Valley Forge, PA at MidAmeriCon II this weekend.

The convention will be called NorthAmeriCon ’17. It will be held at the The Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel and Casino over July 6-9, 2017.

The Guests of Honor will be: Daina Chaviano, Tobias S. Buckell, Brother Guy Consolmagno SJ, Javier Grillo-Marxuach, George Perez and Paula Smith.

2017 Site Selection Ballot Issued

This year’s Worldcon, MidAmericon II, has issued the site selection ballot for the 2017 NASFiC. This allows WSFS members to decide which of the two competing bids (San Juan, Puerto Rico or Valley Forge, Pennsylvania) will host the 2017 North American Science Fiction Convention. A NASFiC is held in North America when the World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) is outside of North America. The 2017 Worldcon, Worldcon 75, is in Helsinki, Finland.

You can download the ballot, and also information posted by the two bids, from the MidAmericon II website (scroll down past the information about the 2018 Worldcon site selection).

You can only vote in the site selection election if you are a current Supporting or Attending Member of MidAmericon II. In addition you will need to purchase an Advance Supporting Membership of the 2017 NASFiC. The price of this has been set at $35 by agreement between the two bids and the administering Worldcon. Voting in site selection automatically makes you a Supporting (non-attending) member of the 2018 NASFiC. You will be able to upgrade that supporting membership to an Attending membership of whichever bid is selected after the votes have been counted.

For NASFiC purposes, North America includes Hawaii, Central America, and the islands of the Caribbean.
